MOST OF US UNDERSTAND that our plants wither if we don't water them regularly. It's the same with people. Taking care of your staff is the most important and valuable thing you can do as a manager. Setting the tone for today's meeting. Letting a guided mediation or physical yoga reset your brain after a busy day of conferences.
In many workplaces, the body is in the same position for many hours a day. Often a position where the shoulders are rotated forward and the chest muscles are compressed. This results in restricted breathing, and when breathing cannot supply the brain and body with oxygen, our mental space for action, our ability to solve problems, our focus and creativity are also limited.
Employees who lack this can of course not contribute optimally to your organization. Add mental stress in the form of deadlines and high workload. This gives an overshoot in our sympathetic nervous system, the one that supplies the body with adrenaline and cortisol, the so-called stress hormones. If we go on for too long with the sympathetic nervous system turned on, we become like an engine that overheats. Then sick leave is soon knocking on the door.
Everything we do needs to be balanced. Daily stress needs daily recovery in order for us to function optimally. A workplace that allows for balance has much to gain. Loyalty grows. Efficiency increases. Empathy and group dynamics thrive. Engagement grows. No employee can develop at work if they are not given the opportunity to develop mentally.
